Zehra Tozal Ozkan is a Sydney-based artist working in abstraction. Her paintings move through questions of identity, emotion, and the layered nature of inner life with a quiet, searching honesty. Her process is intuitive and unhurried. Colour, gesture, and form are built up slowly, each layer holding its own trace, until the work arrives somewhere unexpected. The surfaces that result feel lived-in, held in tension between what is visible and what remains just beneath. Informed by a deep curiosity about human behaviour and emotional experience, Zehra brings a kind of psychological attentiveness to the canvas. Her work does not explain itself. Instead, it opens a space for the viewer to bring their own reading, their own feeling. She paints within the flow of everyday life rather than apart from it, and that groundedness shows. The work is direct, sincere, and insistent.
