I’m Vanessa Cunliffe, a Melbourne-based abstract artist and the person behind Ness Paints Studio.
My journey into art hasn’t followed a carefully mapped-out plan, but then again, neither has much of my life!
After years of building businesses, raising a family and generally flying by the seat of my pants, painting became my creative detour. It gave me somewhere to slow down, breathe and simply see what might happen.
I create intuitive landscapes using watercolour and mixed media.
I rarely begin with a fixed destination - a bit like my life, really.
I start with a colour, a feeling or a mark and then follow wherever it leads. Sometimes it becomes a distant shoreline, a moody horizon or a field that exists only in my imagination. Sometimes it becomes something completely unexpected, which is usually where the magic happens.
My work is layered, imperfect and spontaneous. I love allowing the water and paint to do their own thing rather than trying to control every little detail.
Going with the flow seems to be the only way to go, both in painting and in life.
Every piece is an original moment that could never happen in quite the same way again.
I hope my paintings give people a reason to pause, feel something and perhaps find a little piece of their own story within them.
