Tone Mathews is a Melbourne based artist who has exhibited both locally and internationally. Born in Belfast, Tone graduated from Art College in the UK in the 1970’s, and began an extensive career as an art educator.
Following an academic career, he championed art education as core to the theory of knowledge, all the while maintaining a private art practice and further studies. Tone completed a Doctorate of Education, and this and other life experiences have served as an inspiration for his art imagery.
Now retired and living in Thornbury, Tone has dedicated himself to painting and drawing. His work is abstract, though not totally so, as the viewer may easily find a narrative within the imagery. His preferred medium is large scale oil and acrylic on canvas interspersed with periods of experimental drawing using various media.
Tone has paintings in many private collections around Australia and overseas and now works and creates from his studio in Thornbury.
