Multi- award-winning Australian figurative artist Terry Ffyffe painted across many genres in his four-decade long career in London.
Terrence Michael Fyffe was born in Melbourne, Australia.
He studied Art at Swinburne University under Jeffrey Makin and Roger Kemp. After living the Bohemian life of a painter in Carlton, extensive travels in the Australian outback and several solo shows he went to England to study the masters of European Painting. Unknown in the UK, he painted portraits to support himself while developing his uniquely expressive style.
He came to the attention of the art critics Edward Lucie Smith and the late Daniel Farson who introduced him to the London School. He has won a number of National Competitions, notably the Discerning Eye and held several solo Exhibitions with the now defunct Lamont Gallery.
Fyffe is a true painter in the classical tradition. A fluent draughtsman he understands the challenge of paint and twists it to his advantage. Daniel Farson - Art Correspondent, The Mail on Sunday.
The body of work that Terry Ffyffe left behind in London following his premature death in 2018 has been brought to Melbourne by his family. The three hundred plus canvasses, along with sketches, contain iconic works across the range of genres and themes in which Ffyffe painted.
This exhibition showcases Ffyffe’s developing mastery of various painting techniques and genres over his career. They are a powerful journal of his pilgrim search, to live truly to both his religious faith, and his vocation as a figurative artist.
Terry’s works are often confronting and at times sombre, always beautiful, and forever eliciting further insights in the viewer who takes more than a cursory glance.
