Although always engaged in art of some form, my long term interest began when introduced to Rudolf Steiner’s and Goethe’s Colour theory, and the observation of the unhindered freedom of my students as they unconsciously ‘played with’ and explored colour and texture during creative, artistic undertakings .
As a geographer I endeavoured to foster their imaginative faculty through narrative and story, nurturing their capacity to inwardly sense and ‘feel’ place and space, particularly in the Australian landscape. My hope now is to engender this in my art.
Under the guidance of Ron Reynolds, and support from Riverbend art group members, I have more seriously gained a deeper understand of the visual elements that contribute to the composition of a painting, and how to simplify my work.
In my paintings I strive through colour to reference the ‘beingness’ of the land as sentinel to its story, and to evoke an impression on human feeling of the terrain’s ancient and immortal qualities. As well, the ephemeral nature of the Australian landscape as it emerges out of the interplay of light and darkness.
