Sid's work is inspired by schools of Formalism & Modernist abstraction, in particular artists such as Ralph Balson, Kazimir Malevich & Piet Mondrian.
Sid endeavours to produce work that can readily engage the viewer. I use a grid in structuring the work (the vertical & the horizontal); thus referencing the landscape. Materials such as oils, acrylics, graphite & found objects are used to create geometric shapes that are balanced within the picture plane with a harmony of colour and tone to elicit a contemplative resonance; the equivalent of a latter-day secular mandala.
The content of Sid's paintings are intentionally devoid of any inherent narrative or political spiel. Sid uses the canvas, masonite & plywood that have been discarded. Masonite & plywood substrates allow Sid to emply strip & rub back techniques to reveal the different layering of paint. Sid's intent is to instill an idea of process & history in a painting's creation. He garners picture frames from such places as op-shops, Sunday marketd & markets & hard rubbish collections to present my paintings. This is a deliberate statement of Sid's views on waste & excess consumption.
