Robyn’s artistic journey began early, fuelled by a fascination with dreamlike worlds. Influenced by Surrealism, Symbolism, and Victorian Gothic art, she moved from self-teaching to formal training, gaining a Diploma in Visual Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Art (2010). Although majoring in painting, she has explored various mediums including ink drawing, textiles, and digital prints.
For over a decade, the human face was central to her work, delving into what lies beneath the surface of an expression, the masks people wear and the concept of the ‘pokerface.’ Through countless self-portraits she experimented with various poses, seeking out the most raw, confrontational and complex moments, re-interpreting them through painting, stitching and digital form.
Her bold, monochromatic paintings are designed to evoke a visceral response, while her stitched works convey a softer yet equally intense sensibility. The act of stitching to close what is open can align itself with the closure of wounds and masking a vulnerability that is otherwise laid bare, making the process integral to the final piece.
