Lisa Buckland is a Melbourne-based visual artist working across traditional and contemporary media, including watercolour, acrylic, sumi ink and digital drawing. Her practice explores identity, human connection and our relationship with the natural world, shaped by personal experience and a lifelong engagement with photography.
Lisa, a former graphic designer, uses photographs to create evocative depictions of wildlife and flora that inspire a sense of wonder and quiet whimsy, while drawing attention to the impact of climate change on vulnerable ecosystems. Influenced by Japanese art and woodblock printing, her work is defined by expressive brushwork and thoughtfully considered colour palettes.
In recent years, digital media has become central to her practice, leading to public art commissions and new creative directions. Following a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease and ongoing dialysis, digital drawing has provided a flexible and sustaining mode of expression. Current narratives reflect on fading beauty, transience and resilience, including a painted blue series inspired by sea and sky — colours that offer calm and support within clinical spaces — featuring recurring motifs of birds and blossoming trees.
