Laura Wright

Laura Wright (b. 1976) is a Melbourne/Naarm-based abstract artist whose practice explores the relationship between material, process and experience. Working across acrylic, oil, cold wax and mixed media, Wright uses layering, staining, covering, removing and revealing as both material processes and ways of investigating how experience leaves its mark. Her work is process-led and responsive, often beginning without a predetermined image and developing through an ongoing negotiation with the surface. Residue, incidental marks and the physical history of making frequently become part of the work itself. Rather than treating these as imperfections to be removed, Wright considers what they might reveal when given attention. This approach allows earlier actions to remain present within a work even as subsequent layers alter, obscure or reinterpret them.
