Jane Docherty — Artist, Painter & Photographer
Working primarily in watercolour and mixed media, I explore the relationship between observation, memory and emotion. Drawing on my extensive background in photography, I approach painting with a heightened awareness of light, composition, atmosphere and detail, creating layered works that move between representation and abstraction.
My practice is grounded in an enduring connection to the natural world. I am interested in its quiet rhythms, fragility and resilience, and in the way landscape and light can evoke states of stillness, transformation and renewal.
A life-changing car accident became a pivotal moment in my creative practice, prompting a deeper awareness of presence, perception and the everyday. Painting became a way of slowing down and reconnecting with the world through close observation. Watercolour, with its fluidity and transparency, allows me to work intuitively, embracing both control and chance.
I am drawn to the space between what is seen and what is felt. Through layered washes, fragments of imagery and shifting light, my works seek to create a sense of pause and contemplation.
Ultimately, my practice invites the viewer to look closely, breathe and find moments of beauty and renewal within the ordinary.
