Oupa’s (grandfather) weak spots were SUGAR, MUSIC and NATURE, which is why my Ouma (grandmother) presented as a triple-threat to what he thought would be his lifelong ambition to live as a bachelor with a fine appreciation for stunning cars and a busy social life.
Because when he was almost 40yrs old, my grandmother – almost 15yrs his junior and freshly graduated from university – waltzed into his school to begin her career as a music teacher.
But she also took his heart for a spin and herewith followed the most beautiful photo album of a visual love letter of his life with her.
One of his photos I love most is the one he captured of her, deeply engrossed in picking up seashells in the 1940’s at the beach in Richardsbay, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.
The fact that she was greatly independent, adventurous and had a wicked sense of humour with passions of her own must’ve been what made him feel like he could spend the rest of his life with her.
Thank goodness for that, because now I am here.
