Spending time in the outside world piques my interest in nature and is the inspiration for much of my art. I am particularly intrigued by the way native animals have the ability to blend in with the colours and textures of their environment. It has given rise to the creation of my Blending In series. Two works from that series are the digital paintings, The Undersea Tangle and The Greenpea Wall.
The primary element of all works in the Blending In series is a part of the environment that is the habitat to a species of animal. For these two works it is the seaweedy undersea and pea-covered stone wall. Both I’ve painted in abstract and from a palette of colours that emphasises the features of the environment; the wavey shapes and vivid colours of the undersea and the bright greens and subdued browns of the pea-covered stone wall.
The secondary element of each work is the animals for which the environment is habitat. The animals I’ve painted might appear realistic but, I’ve employed artistic licence and not painted them to represent any known species. And, I’ve chosen to paint them in colours that harmonise with their environment.
The animals in these paintings blend in with their environment and may be noticed only by a second glance of a casual observer.
