Rochelle Van Der Merwe - Contemporary Collage
When we see our ancestors reflect back to us when we dare to truly look at ourselves, we find that what is holding us up, is a whole lineage of women before us. On one of my visits back in my mother country – in particular the one where I had to lay my mother to rest forever – I found myself turning and returning back to this stunning gallery village in the Western Cape Winelands: Lourensford Estate. It was this bronze sculpture of a nude woman sitting forward with crossed legs, looking at her reflection in the water, that completely and utterly captured my attention. Was she looking, searching or longing? There’s something about returning to the source of where we all come from – water. At times, we want to make ourselves safe again by nurturing ourselves as if back in the womb. At other times, we are looking for answers within our own womanhood. What we do always find, though, are ourselves. We are always there, with ourselves – it’s just how much of it we are willing to see and take in.
