Walking through public gardens of Melbourne, I never cease to be in awe of the grandfather trees growing there. These gnarly old trees, despite their age, remain healthy, seasonally producing new growth and bird-attracting fruit. They were the inspiration for my digital painting entitled The Redfruit Tree. The tree in abstract is the primary element of my painting. The trunk’s tortuous black lines and colours from a limited palette, emphasise the trunk’s ruggedness. The plump red fruits assure of the tree’s vigour. The more realistic black birds are a secondary element of the painting. They share colours in harmony with the tree but, in their relative fragility, provide a counterpoint to it. Painting this picture was my way of paying homage to the grandfather trees of Melbourne.
