Part of my Gold Mountain exhibition , a history of Gold and family in Harrietville, where my ancestor John Bromley discovered gold in the early 1850’s. With European migrants fleeing poverty, many southern Chinese also made the journey to the Victorian Goldfields. A large community of Chinese miners came to Harrietville in 1857, after the Buckland “Race” Riots near present day Porepunkah. This is a work of memory, the Empress is my Mother Val in her wedding dress, original lanterns from the Joss House on Mill Road, Harrietville. Japanese camellias (flower of southern China) and the dragon in honor of Val, born in the dragon year 1928. Her love of Chinese history and art, our trip to the Great Wall, these memories she retained in her Alzheimer’s disease. She was my guiding star, which I wrote in Japanese kanji.
