A lemon leans delicately besides a small article of delft blue porcelain, the harmony of blue and yellow drawing us closer to the arrangement. A simple clay pipe juts out into our space, its head leaning outward towards something beyond our field of view. An open facing seashell alludes to another world beyond our view and the understanding that all things come and pass. My inspiration came from the Dutch painter Willem Kalf, who like Vermeer, used the aid of optics to paint some of the effects seen in his works. Here I have tried to render each object with the most simple of means, relying on carefully placed highlights to give form to the otherwise flat areas of paint.
