A small wall mounted cabinet holds a secret world. A dish of fruit and a cream server hang delicately in space, while an old note and glass candle holder hide in the shadows. The small white vessel leans forward slightly, hinting at a chance of falling while the open door allows warm light to wash over the scene. The high relief and texture of the light hitting the cabinet wall was created with the addition of sand to my paint, a technique used by Johannes Vermeer in his famous View of Delft to add sparkle and draw the eye. I have also attempted some of the optical effects seen in his paintings relating to his use of the camera obscura. Small dots of colour, an extreme temperature shift on the wall as well as highly saturated outlines along edges and cast shadows can all be found in the painting. Combined they help to guide the view into the scene and explore the main elements while allowing others to fade into the background.
