Sacred Alliances is a reworking of a painting completed in 2024 for an exhibition called Divine Darkness @Red Gallery. It’s part of the Female Saints with Cats series. Since 2024 I started experimenting a lot with digital tools like Procreate, which I find very exciting but also very different to painting ’old school’. What I loved in this instance is the precision with which line and decoration worked with colour to produce the final result.
Sacred Alliances is from my Female Saints with Cats series, which reimagines female sanctity through Byzantine iconography, cats and playful excess. In terms of the concept, I’m drawn to female saints who have suffered in life but have endured and survived despite the men who dominated their worlds. And why cats? These stoic, independent, funny creatures are grounded in reality and, over the years, have imprinted themselves onto my own identity. In the artworks, their mesmerising presence tells a tale of empowerment and resistance to oppressive rules.
This artwork is a limited edition print on gallery quality paper. It’s 1/20 and signed by the artist.
