Rosies Red Right Hand-by Karen Chappelow 90x100cm
We Can Do It!
Symbolic of womanhood and the power that is within, I have morphed Wonder Woman and Rosie the Riveter. Flexing her muscles in the iconic WW2 posters, Rosie became the embodiment of second-wave feminism, with her red scarf and her determined gaze. Rosie was responsible for enlisting 20,000,000 women involved in the war effort and proving that women really can do anything. In my homage to Rosie, she is holding her protruding tongue to encourage others not hold their tongues, but rather to speak their truths. Her red hand references one of my favourite Nick Cave songs, based on Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Speaking back to the hegemony of the vengeful fist of god is Wonder Woman – so don’t mess with her!
I have presented this piece as a stained glass church window encircled by a halo with the words “Possumus facere id” Latin for “ We Can Do It” which also featured on the WW2 poster.
