The Legacy painting by Alex Jobbagy draws inspiration from the cultural connections that shape Melbourne and Australia, particularly the significant contributions of migrants. The scene unfolds in a room where a toddler is playing with building blocks in front of a model of the Immigration Museum, adding another cube to the structure. This act serves as a powerful symbol of the ongoing, multi-generational influence of the migrant community. The blocks are decorated with a world map, representing the diverse origins of those who have migrated to Melbourne. While the museum preserves the history of immigration, the child – now a third-generation Australian – actively contributes to the city’s evolving legacy. The cycle of migration and cultural exchange continues to shape Melbourne’s future.
