A comment on the forgotten birds of Melbourne, introduced by humans, but an ancient species that lives quietly amongst the loud and colourful native birds. Unassuming and gentle, carriers for messages in WWII, helped Darwin in his research into the origin of the species. Pigeons deserve our notice and love. During the pandemic pigeons were a bird I started to admire, once humans became more sparse in parks I visited. They became the subjects for a small series of watercolours of 5 varieties.. My pigeons were animated by Sean Healy and exhibited at the Hume Winter Lights Festival 2023 and the animation was also shown as a solo exhibition on the Sunshine Projection Wall 2024. I met Henry at a cafe in Essendon, while he was looking for crumbs. Laneway Henry is a reflection on urban birds in Melbourne and how native species have been driven into our cities by the growth of humans. This has marginalized city pigeons, the original avian immigrants, who arrived on ships in the 1850s. Henry is overlooking the city, wondering which human enjoying their flat white will leave him a few pastry crumbs.
