This piece contains two artworks, ‘Daydreaming of Courtyards’ and ‘Dreaming about Old Buildings’ which are read together.
‘Daydreaming of Courtyards’ is an artwork that is a combination of 3 separate drawings which capture distinct architectural and spatial subjects that are tied together through a shared mode of expression that creates a unified whole out of 3 separate works. The central drawing started as exploratory architectural sketch that explored stately courtyard homes but evolved along with the rest of the piece into immaculately detailed artworks that depict mythical and gracious buildings that are harmoniously set against a rich landscape setting. This piece bleeds the boundaries between architectural thinking and art and demonstrates the the interconnectedness of both processes for the artist.
‘Daydreaming About Old Buildings’ is an artwork that depicts a sectional axonometric through a richly detailed and grandiose building that sits in harmony rather than in opposition to it’s surrounding landscape. The building is designed and depicted with great intricacy and detail to match the surrounding landscape which appears to have grown around it over decades and centuries. This work to speaks to to a relationship between building and landscape that is seldom found in Australia and it talks to the powerful presence old buildings and landscapes have over people that feels impossible to replicate. Of particular interest is the floating loosely drawn buildings to the right of the composition which were conceptual sketches that got absorbed into the composition as the larger drawing expanded.
