This work (one of three which can be hung as an individual work, a diptych, or triptych) seeks to capture the raw power of nature and its paradoxical characteristics. Forces of nature can ironically manifest as terrifying beauty- that is, they can both delight and terrify simultaneously. Examples include the terrifying beauty of a large glacier calving into the sea, a spectacular avalanche, or an enigmatic volcano spewing out large volumes of fiery red-hot lava which then streams out across the surrounding terrain. Included in a larger suite of paintings inspired by the dynamics of the cryosphere, this painting together with its companion works aims to invite viewers to see what they don’t always notice. It also seeks to invite viewers to reflect on the raw power of nature and to respect the many lessons it yields. Cryosphere: ‘Components of the Earth System at and below the land and ocean surface that are frozen, including snow cover, glaciers, ice sheets, ice shelves, icebergs, sea ice, lake ice, river ice, permafrost, and seasonally frozen ground, and solid precipitation’ (World Meteorological Association). NB. The logo signature MJJ for this painting is painted subtly in a discrete section of the painting to form part of the artwork as a whole and to enable the viewer to change the painting’s orientation should they wish to do so. Detailed images of the signature are attached to assist viewers to locate it. The signature can be located with a magnifying glass.
