This work is one of a series of studies of women’s undergarments from various historical periods. Drawing on the Rose Chong Costumes archive for reference, the garments were selected for their form and texture rather than historical representation. These unmentionables conceal, restrict and constrain, but also sculpt, support and emphasise the female form. Function or dysfunction? Modesty or vanity? Fashion or social control? Partly observational studies of form and tone. Partly homage to vintage fashion. Mostly paintings of underwear.
