This is my burnt possum skin. On the right is my personal totem, Bunjil (Bururong) the wedge tailed eagle and on the left is Dalipna (Yorta Yorta) the pelican. The wedge tailed eagle is one of my mobs totems, but I call him Bunjil out of respect for Bunurong people, being the country I lived on when I felt connected to him, and for Naarm mob taking me on as their own. I made this possum skin in a workshop with uncle Nakia Firebrace at the Gunung-Willam-Balluk learning centre after a beautiful welcome and Dalipna Garadha pelican ceremony. The pelican ceremony really resonated with me and helped me find a sense of belonging, and made me reminisce on one of my childhood favourite movies Storm Boy. After hearing uncle Nakia talk about the significance of the Pelican to Yorta Yorta people and its song line, I wanted to honour it with my totem Bunjil. I feel really honoured to be trusted to include de this song line in my possum skin and drawing. “We might fly to the left, we might fly to the right, but we all fly together” The possum skin is 60 cm in width, with an additional 20cm hanging tail reaching 80cm laid flat.
