This work is inspired by glaciers found in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. While visiting Mt Cook in 2018, I had the unique experience of hearing an avalanche echoing out across the valley on what was a stunning and very still clear blue-sky day. The sound was unbelievably pure and represented for me a precious chance encounter with the surrounding echo system at work. The sound also remined me of the paradoxical power of an avalanche – paradoxical because avalanches are a spectacular example of nature’s power, yet they are also a measure of a glacier’s vulnerability in this age of the Anthropocene.
