The composition is anchored by a centrally placed vase, rendered in soft pinks and corals, which serves as the foundation for an explosion of flowers. Rather than striving for realism, I wanted to celebrate texture and ornamentation. Stencilling aided in creating damask-like patterns that I wove throughout the painting to create a sense of rhythmic movement. The use of gold pigment allowed the painting to catch and reflect light, shifting throughout the day. I was interested in emphasising the tactility of the surface through these methods, adding another layer through impasto brushwork that allows the viewer to trace the artist’s hand across the canvas.
